“Mark Ellison of Ecopac tendered for the installation of our proposed solar panel units, initially for a 4 Kw system, then later to make proper comparison with other tenders, a 3.5 Kwh which we eventually chose. Mark even went to the effort of providing prices with the same make of panels as the other quotes. The panels were fitted in a day, connected & commissioned the next morning. A minor problem with the Desk top unit which relays information to the user had a fault, this led to him revisiting a couple of times to determine a new unit was required. This was replaced, as expected, with a reputable firm, free of charge. I have been impressed with the level of service, both during and after the installation. Mark was always friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and always cleared up after work. I found him easy to talk to with no high pressure selling tactics, just straight forward information. The solar units have so far surpassed are expectations, even in this poor dull, sunless summer. I would recommend Mark to anyone considering solar power or any of his products. P.R Quinn.

Solar thermal is an energy efficient way of heating water using the sun’s rays throughout the daytime. Working in a similar way to Solar PV, solar panels or ‘collectors’ use the suns energy to help customers make their home more energy efficient.

The solar energy heats up a liquid within the collectors, generally anti freeze which is then pumped around a system to heat a cylinder of water. The water in the cylinder is heated until it reaches a temperature set by a thermostat. A conventional water heating system can be used to ‘top up’ the heat of the water during the night or through times of low sunlight.

As with most renewable energy efficiencies, there are many advantages to solar thermal. Not only can it help customers saves on fuel bills, but it can cost less than other tehcnologies in the same field. You may be able to generate earnings from solar thermal via the ‘Renewable Heat Incentive’ which is a Government scheme being introduced in October 2012.

Ecopac know that certain angles of panels, and particular latitudes provide optimum generation, which we will advise on at the very start of your enquiry. MCS standards on the installation of solar thermal technology are followed religiously by our employees. We pride ourselves on being MCS and REA compliant as this helps us to provide the highest quality products and services.

Please contact us to see if your home is suitable for solar thermal.

Biomass is a term generally used to describe waste which can be burnt to create energy. It is derived from many different sources such as residues, crops and trees. There are 4 main primary classes of biomass power systems:

– Direct Fired
– Co – Fired
– Gasification
– Modular

The majority of today’s biomass power plants are direct fired systems which are very similar to fossil fuel power plants, where the biomass is burnt within a boiler and produces high pressure steam. The steam is directed to a steam turbine before flowing over a series of aero-dynamic turbine blades which force the turbine to rotate. The turbine is connected to an electricity generator which creates electric as the turbine turns.

Whilst this type of technology is tried and tested, the level of efficiency achievable is somewhat limited. Biomass power boilers are typically in the 20-50 MW range in comparison to coal-fired plants which sit in the 100-1500 MW bracket. Even though it is entirely possible to reach efficiency ratings of over 40% using steam technology, it is more realistic to expect around 20% – 25%.

Co-firing involves substituting a percentage of biomass for coal in an existing furnace. Because much of the existing equipment requires no major modifications, co-firing is less expensive and therefore more economically viable. Biomass reduces Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and other air emissions. Once the boiler is set for peak performance, the efficiency of adding biomass sits alongside that of coal. This allows the energy in biomass to be converted to electricity with the high efficiency (in the 33-37% range) of a modern coal-fired power plant.

Gasification works by heating biomass to such a temperature that solid biomass breaks down to form a flammable gas (biogas). The biogas should be cleaned and filtered to remove unwanted chemical compounds. The gas can be used in more efficient power generation systems called combined-cycles, which combine both gas and steam turbines for the production of electricity, sometimes reaching up to a 60% efficiency rating.

Gasification systems will be coupled with fuel cell systems for future applications. Fuel cells convert hydrogen gas to electricity (and heat) using an electro-chemical process. There are very little air emissions and the primary exhaust is water vapour. As the costs of fuel cells and biomass gasifiers come down, these systems will proliferate.

Modular systems employ some of the same technologies mentioned above, but on a smaller scale more applicable to villages, farms, and small industry. These systems are now under development and could be most useful in remote areas where biomass is abundant and electricity is scarce.

Current and upcoming government incentives are making using renewable energy to generate your own energy, much more rewarding than they already are. As well as reducing carbon footprint, making your home or business energy efficient, and saving money on fuel bills – you can also make money from the extra energy you create but don’t use.

The Energy Saving Trust have created a Cashback Calculator which allows you to estimate the amount of money you could both save and earn when installing water or wind technologies. There is also a Solar Energy Calculator for determining financial gain using solar energy.

Some of the financial incentive schemes available at the moment include the Feed In Tariff, the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and the Renewable Heat Premium Payment.

Please Contact us to find out more about these financial incentives.
