Even in temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees, an air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from inside. Heat pumps require electricity to drive cooling fans, a compressor and a pump, however the heat they extract is naturally restored.
Air source heat pumps run on electricity which reduces the need to pay for gas, oil or solid fuels to heat your property. Emissions can be reduced even further if the heat pump is powered by another renewable technology such as Solar PV.
As the pumps can be a direct replacement to an existing boiler, no extra space is needed and the maintenance required is minimal. These pumps are often described as a ‘fit and forget’ technology because after the initial set up, they run in the background and require little attention.
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) provides financial support to encourage the uptake of renewable and low carbon heat technologies like heat pumps. To reduce your CO² emissions further, consider installing Solar PV or other form of renewable electricity generating system to power the compressor and pump.
